Over the Top or Under the Weather by Last November, 2008

Bio.: Lead singer and guitarist Luke Pilgrim began performing at age 11, and quickly began hining his song writing skills. By the time he reached 15, he had completed writing, recording and producing Last November’s debut album, “All the Gory Details” which was released independently in 2005. In 2006, “All the Gory Details” was picked up by Atlanta based Southern Track Records, home to artists such as Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots and Bruce Springsteen, to rave reviews. It received multi-formatted airplay on over 200 national radio stations and was featured on television shows such as MTV’S “The Real World”.

In 2007 Pilgrim and Last November headed back to the studio to record their second album for Southern Track Records, “Over the Top or Under the Weather”. Pilgrim’s talents flourished under the guidance of platinum-selling producer Steven Haigler(Brand New, Pixies, As Tall as Lions). The album was mastered by Rodney Mills(Pearl Jam, Lynyrd Skynard). Under their guidance Lukes music matured with intricate vocals and edgy guitar inventions.

Released in 2008, “Over the Top or Under the Weather” soon proved to be the perfect follow up to Last November’s first album. “The Bumper Sticker Song”, the first single and music video from the album immediately captured the attention of Last November’s rapidly growing fan base. Pilgrim says “The song is about finding someone who can love you in spite of your flaws, weird hang ups, disorders and overall neurotic obsessive nature”. Other songs on the album, such as Jesus had Breakfast in Bed and Butter Me Up rock the crowd, while Sunday Afternoon creates a lush landscape of baroque pop that is both hauntingly catchy, and intelligent. Seventeen at Three in the Morning, also released as a single and music video, is a power pop ballad that is becoming the anthem of teenagers in America. This single is currently being played in heavy rotation on over 65 radio stations nationwide with the numbers increasing daily.

In 2008, Last November was nominated for the New Music Weekly Award for “New Top 40 Group of the Year”. They have also shared the stage with such groups as Plain White T’s, Cake, Pink, Family Force 5 and Interpol, to name a few. They are touring nationally to promote “Over the Top or Under the Weather” and have a national high school tour in the works.

My Review: “The laid-back album with the big message” is how I would describe “Over the Top or Under the Weather”. As with most “alternative” music, the music, itself is not as hard hitting as say, classic rock or conventional pop, however, the social and personally conscience lyrics tell a story to which almost everyone can relate. They speak to the youth of the world today and their struggle to find acceptance and love in today’s world. It is regrettable that the youth today, especially American youth are burdened by such problems, however, Luke Pilgrim, and Last November, through Over the Top or Under the Weather adequately address these problems and provide a much needed “glimmer of hope” to today’s youth, that things will be O.K., they will find someone to love and that they will eventually find their place in today’s society. “Over the Top or Under the Weather” should do best in the high school to college age group. For your enjoyment I have included several tracks from a couple of tracks from “Over the Top or Under the Weather” as well as a video from YouTube of The Bumper Sticker Song.

Please enjoy “Over the Top or Under the Weather” by Last November.
