My Review: “A hard hit’n, hard rock’n band with the potential to hit it big, very big!” is how I’d best describe Finger Of Speech!
If you follow my blog, you know I have been “blessed” with several Modern or Hard Rock bands to review. Don’t get me wrong now, the others have been great bands, they have potential, but one thing I noticed was their EPs only contained 3 tracks, well, one contained four, but one was an edited version of one of the other songs, so it was really only 3 songs. So, I’m wondering, is this the best they have, or do they have other great songs they are saving for another EP or full length album? Finger Of Speech, on the other hand, has released an 10 track EP, Finger Of Speech or FOS, containing all solid, well played, for the most part hard hitting songs! The one track I found interesting is the last rack “Evil In The Park”. It starts out with a dark, vocal centered opening, than explodes into almost a blues rock piece more in the style of Jimi Hendrix. In other words, if you purchase the full EP you’re not just getting 2 or 3 good tracks and than just “filler tracks”! You’ll definitely be getting your money’s worth!
I think Finger Of Speech probably lies somewhere between hard rock and melodic metal, as with most Indie bands, sometimes defining a definite genre is impossible, which is one reason Indie bands are gaining in popularity. The music has some good “hooks” and I find it quite “catchy”.
While it’s true several of FOS’s songs are drum and bass driven, several others can equally be said to be guitar driven as well. In other words, Finger Of Speech is a well rounded band, period. Their lyrics are profound and meaningful. Curtis sings in a clear and understandable voice even on those pieces where the lyrics are more shouted than sung. Walters on bass and Robinette on drums do an outstanding job when they are in the forefront. Not to be outdone, the same can be said for Curtis and Sims when the guitar section takes the lead. As I said, a well rounded band where everyone gets their moment in the spotlight!
You know, one of the hardest things when you are reviewing a strong EP or album where all the tracks are great is choosing which tracks to feature in the review, no matter which ones I choose, something is getting left out, so I do the best I can, I try and show a bands diversity whenever I can. So, I chose “Impact Dawn” and “Never Again” because they are FOS’s “lead songs”. I chose “Last Time”, one because I like the lyrics and I like the blend of drums bass guitars and vocals, “Free” because I like the outstanding guitar work just before midpoint in the track and than the last rack on the EP, “Evil In The Park”, because I like the “Jimi Hendrix feel” to it! Those who know me know I’m a big Hendrix fan, mainly because I was a junior and senior in high school when “Foxy Lady” and “Fire” were top songs on the charts! He’s someone I grew up with, musically speaking! Anyway, those are the songs I chose and the reasons I chose them. I’m sure some will disagree, but as I say, I couldn’t feature all of the tracks on the FOS EP or I certainly would have!
You know, I’ve been writing reviews for over 2 years now and I can pretty much tell if a band “has what it takes, THE SOUND it takes to really make it to the big time and super stardom and yes, I think Finger Of Speech definitely does “Have What It Takes”!
I rate Finger Of Speech EP by Finger Of Speech a SOLID 10 and a “Thumbs Up”, good luck guys, just remember me when you hit the big time!
